The Residency Program

Residencies are recognized as one of the most effective ways to provide a productive and creative working environment for dance companies, choreographers, dancers, composers, and all dance related artists. The Residency Program is the heart of Kaatsbaan's mission and is open to national and international, emerging, mid-career, and established dance professionals.

Residencies can be for a weekend or multi-weeks in length. Studios, housing in the Dancers's Inn, and kitchen facilities in the Gate House are available on site. Kaatsbaan is a year round operation presently able to accommodate up to 40 residents. The black-box theatre is available for open rehearsals, to showcase works in progress, and for evening performances.

Residency partners have included the NYS DanceForce, the New York State Council on the Arts Dance Program, Danspace Project, New York Live Arrts and the Fund for Mutal Understanding. Residencies are individually designed between the artists, partners and Kaatsbaan staff to fit the needs of the dance artists or company.

Choreographers, dance dompanies, and all dance artists are invited to submit a brief letter of introduction by mail or email outling their project, specific residency need,s and intended accomplishments. Include the proposed length of time, number of artists involved, studio needs, and any proposals for outreach, workshops or black-box theatre performances. Please state if you are a nonprofot organization, have an umbrella relationship with a nonprofit organization, are an LLC, or are operating as an independent artist. The letter of introduction should be no more than two pages in length. Also, please include web links to your work or a DVD.

Application to the UpStream Residency Awards and other select residency programs may require alternative requirements or additional information. Please scroll below to see those guidelines.

Kaatsbaan is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization thus, all programs, performances, and activities must have a source of funding. Some residency programs are funded by a partner organization and others by individual donors who have an interest in a specific artist, company or choreographer. Kaatsbaan tries to make residencies as affordable as possible however, subsidizing all residencies is not within our financial capability.

Fees for residencies start at $750 a week and are tailored to fit a companies size and facility use. Studios and housing needs, lighting and technical requirements, and time of year are considered with resident fees. Fees assist the host organization with insurance requirements, electric and heating, maintenance and cleaning. A brief email proposal can usually determine an approximate fee.
