August 16, 2019

Many thanks to all who came out to celebrate the Pro-Studio/Stella Abrera® initiative on Friday, August 16th. The program was a bit of an experiment, as no other exists like it, not in city or suburb, and certainly not on 153 pastoral riverfront acres. But we are proud to say it has been a success. In just three weeks, each young professional dancer took broad strides as an athlete and as an artist. Perhaps in future years, this program will expand into a more robust workshop and symposium, open to young talents from a range of companies and dance genres, with multiple showings and larger audiences.

We are excited by what just took place, and for what’s to come!

Thank you to Stella Abrera, the creator and director of this inspiring and unique program!

Dance is a language that goes beyond the capabilities of spoken word, and to create and deliver this language, artists need the space to do so. Kaatsbaan, with its unparalleled facilities and staff, is that space.

Ballet Hispánico is thrilled to have the opportunity to have an upcoming residency at Kaatsbaan, which is only made possible by the support of generous individuals such as yourself.

I hope you will consider joining the Ballet Hispánico familia in our appreciation of Kaatsbaan’s extensive and invaluable residency programs, so we may continue developing works that give voice to the Latinx experience.

In a time where diversity is at the utmost importance, our residency at Kaatsbaan will help propel us further in our celebration of accessibility and cultural fusions. We are incredibly grateful for the unique artistic environment Kaatsbaan provides, and we hope for the continued success in all of their programs!

“Having a great space in which to work allows you to fully focus on the creative process without any distractions. The space will invite you to start a game in which you introduce your “impossible” ideas to the reality of gravity, speed and substance trying to make them all get along. If you are lucky, sometimes they even fall in love with each other.” ‑ Alejandro Cerrudo

My September residency at Kaatsbaan will be the very beginning of an exciting journey for me and eight wonderful artists! We will immerse ourselves in a creative process that will start shaping and giving life to a new full-length production to be premiered next year. Kaatsbaan will provide invaluable space and time enabling us to push ourselves to new limits of discovery and creativity. My entire team and I are so very grateful to Kaatsbaan for making this opportunity possible.

Having this chance to work in such an inspiring place that incites an atmosphere of research and experimentation is an invaluable gift that is only possible with the support of generous individuals like you.

PLEASE DONATE TODAY TO THE KAATSBAAN ANNUAL FUND

Many thanks and I hope to meet you all at Kaatsbaan in September!

 Sincerely,
Alejandro Cerrudo

“Kaatsbaan is a gorgeous sanctuary for artists to train and create.”
- Stella Abrera
Director, Kaatsbaan Pro-Studio/Stella Abrera®
Associate Director, Kaatsbaan Extreme Ballet®
Principal Dancer, American Ballet Theatre

I’m incredibly excited to launch Pro-Studio/Stella Abrera® at Kaatsbaan, a unique program focused on professional ballet dancers in the early stages of their careers. During Pro-Studio/Stella Abrera®, dancers will train in their summer off-seasons in Kaatsbaan’s cathedral-like studios, find inspiration in the glorious natural surroundings, and advance their journeys from athlete to artist with coaches of the highest caliber. This program, which provides a rare opportunity not readily available for young professionals, is only possible by the support of generous individuals like you.

For my birthday, I’m raising money to support Pro-Studio/Stella Abrera® and the other outstanding programs at Kaatsbaan. This special sanctuary for dance has played an important role in my own artistic and leadership growth and I’m so grateful for its contributions to the arts – I wish for its continued success!

PLEASE DONATE TODAY TO THE KAATSBAAN ANNUAL FUND

Many thanks and hope to see you all soon at Kaatsbaan!

“The Kaatsbaan residency will remain in our collective memory, as one of the most valuable and enriching experiences we have ever had.” - Fernando Sáez, Executive Director, Malpaso Dance Company, Cuba

Kaatsbaan is truly an artistic paradise in the Hudson Valley. As a breeding ground for artistic action and achievement and an irreplaceable resource for both the dance world and the local communities, Kaatsbaan has been an integral part of the artistic life and economic evolution of the Hudson Valley for over 20 years.

Following the visionary and entrepreneurial spirit of the founders, we at Kaatsbaan look forward to the goals set forth in the organization's mission and to maintain the reputable standards of our programs: Residencies, Performances, and Education/Community Outreach.

It is not a given that choreographers always have a place to innovatively create and that dancers always have a studio where they can train and rehearse. And, it is not a given that communities will always have cultural resources, like Kaatsbaan, that build economic and educational opportunities to support our dreams of exemplary places to live.

The Hudson Valley is our home and the Kaatsbaan team will do our very best to continue to provide exceptional opportunities for dance artists, the dance world and for our treasured community.

Only with support from individuals like you is this possible.

Please make a tax-deductible donation to our annual fund so we all can continue to provide the extraordinary experience that is Kaatsbaan.

We are truly grateful for your support and thank you in advance for your generosity.

Sincerely,
Sonja Kostich, Executive Director

Celebrating 20 Years of Residencies and Performances

May 2019

Did you know Kaatsbaan began presenting diverse dance residencies and performances in 2000, when Phase I construction was completed. The first on-site gala, Ready or Not, starring Julie Kent, Paloma Herrera, Angel Corella, Robert Hill and Anna Liceca from American Ballet Theatre, set the standard for Kaatsbaan to grow into one of the leading dance presenters in upstate New York. Progressive, modern, classical and contemporary ballet, folk dance, jazz, and flamenco have been presented by world famous, nationally recognized, and emerging companies. Year-round programs featured experimental choreography, works in progress, repertory, revivals, and world previews and premieres.

Over the past 20 years…

• Kaatsbaan has hosted 224 professional dance companies in its residency program providing over 19,200 hours of creative/rehearsal time to dance artists

1,740 professional dancers have worked in Kaatsbaan studios

• Kaatsbaan has presented over 260 professional dance companies in performance

• Kaatsbaan has spent $33 million in the Mid-Hudson Valley:
• $1.15 million in property acquisition
• $4.75 million in construction and property improvements
• $27.1 million in program related expense

2,400 of pre-professional students have trained at Kaatsbaan’s Extreme Ballet® summer intensive

12,800 public school students have visited Kaatsbaan to see live dance performances

Each year Kaatsbaan sponsors over 30 outreach programs for public schools, community lectures, and open rehearsals that are appropriate for all ages and are open and free to the public. At a cost to the organization of over $40,000 annually, outreach programs directly benefit students and the community and offset Kaatsbaan’s exemption from property taxes.

Kaatsbaan attracts over $25,000 a year in educational grants that are awarded to students who attend Kaatsbaan’s Extreme Ballet® program and other training initiatives.

Kaatsbaan brings movie productions and international dance stars to the Hudson Valley. Ric Burns filmed much of his PBS documentary “American Ballet Theatre: A History" at Kaatsbaan. Principal dancers from American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, the National Ballet of Canada, Royal Winnepeg Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, Jose Limon Dance Company, Paul Taylor Dance Company, the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg, Russia, and Flamenco Vivo/Carlota Santana have all performed at Kaatsbaan.

He received his BFA in Dance Performance from University of Michigan and performed with Pascal Rioult and Martha Graham Dance Company prior to his work with Mark Morris.
